The main interest of Dr. Spano is the molecular oncology. Her studies are focused on the unravelling the molecular basis of cancer development by dissecting the functional role of proteins/enzymes of interest in the regulation of signaling pathways and cellular processes involved in cancer development and progression. Her field is not only the basic research but also the translational research. Indeed, she performs in vitro functional studies in order to assess the anti-cancer properties of small molecules that are able to target the proteins/enzymes object of her studies. Actually, the main subject of study is GRASP65, a Golgi “matrix” protein involved in formation of the membranous tubules connecting the stacks of Golgi complex. During G2 phase the unlinking of the Golgi ribbon into isolated stacks is regulated by JNK2-mediated phosphorylation of GRASP65. This process is required for entry into mitosis. Dr. Spano is studying the molecular mechanisms and the signaling pathways underlying the GRASP65-mediated Golgi unlinking and the entry into mitosis.
